Back to My Setup
How I Built my own website.
It's not so difficult as it may seem.
I first tried to set up a webserver at home but my ISP wouldn't let it happen. It is probably much more secure not to have a webserver at home anyway.  I bought some web space as the freebies are very restrictive or full of ads. Mine came from
Streamline.net which cost me about £29 for two years with a .org.uk domain name.
All the software you need is free and I eventually found stuff easy to load and use. I did have a few false starts.
Although I haven't built a webserver at home, having some means of checking what you doing and building a complete web site at home before uploading to the web is in my view essential.

Setting up

Go to Control Panel
Add/Remove software
Add/Remove windows components
If you have a line that says Internet Information Services (IIS) uncheck it

You now need to install AppServ which is available at
http://sourceforge.net/project/

To obtain the latest version (win-32) type 'AppServ' in the find field then click 'downloads'.
Download 'AppServ Open Project'
Install 'AppServ'
- select 'Apache HTTP Server'
-for Server name (host) - I used 'localhost' for local testing purposes otherwise use your internet URL
-for email use your own email address.
A folder 'C:\Appserv' will have been created with a sub-folder called 'www'. This is where all the web documents go.

For a web authoring package I used Nvu  http://www.nvu.com     Document made with Nvu
Install Nvu
Start building web pages and save them with any images to c:\appserv\www .
I learned the bare bones of Nvu from The Haynes Manual borrowed from the library.

Once you've got all that sorted you will need web space and some means of uploading the files.
You will need something like AutoFTP
http://www.primasoft.com/ftp.htm

Finally, you require Active Perl. Download, install and forget about it!
Active Perl  http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/

There is lots on the web about building your own website. Give it a go if you get the time.
